so what do you think?  do you feel like our government should have so much say in our personal lives?  Why didn't they just let the business' chose if they wanted to be smoke free.  What next, no smoking in our cars?

And why is it so important that people drinking should be able to have fresh air while they are killing their livers?  Then they get in their cars and run over the poor smoker sitting 15 feet away from the door?

Yes, the government should have say in anything that is a matter of safety for the general population.  Smoking is a hazzard for the general population.  With this new Illinois law the public is safer and better off.

Meanwhile, alchohol is a whole other topic.  There are laws in place that say you can't drink and drive after .08.  Enforcing this law unfortunately is harder than enforcing a smoking ban law.  Reason being everyone in an establishment can see the smoke and call 311 to complain.  Even if the whole restaurant/bar could witness someone drinking above .08, there is nothing illegal about that unless they get into a car.

The other night I was at a bar tossing a few down and groov'in on some tunes. All of a sudden, some fool sticks his head in and yells at the bartender that there were two smokers, smoking less than 25 ft. from the door! There were about 35 people in the place, and almost every one of them screamed "F,,,,,,, you"! in unison. The jerk then started to threaten to call the police and to have the bar ticketed, and everyone just laughed. He then left. Had he stayed around for a minute longer, he surely would have had his ass kicked, big time! This is how Seattle is handling the new draconian smoking laws.

Well if smoking is so horrible for the safety of the population how come our Wonderful government doesn't just ban the sale of tobacco?  Maybe its because they like the money coming in.  they dont care if you die from smoking or second hand smoke.   But they would never be able to live with them selves if they saw ONE opportunity to tax or ticket the public on something and didn't

What about other issues like health care and social security.  Dont you think that proper and good health care would be for the Good of public?  Would you rather see the public with a great health care plan or the public getting ticketed for smoking or not wearing our seatbelts?

Well if that is the case, then I'll expect your signature to rid this town of the personal automobile on the grounds of safety to the general population. There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the US in 2005. The financial costs of the crases is more then 230 billion dollars. 2.9 millins people injured and 42,636 people killed. Leaving about 115 people a day who die in auto crashes, one every 13 minutes. Car emissions contribute to lung cancer and other tumours, increased cardiovascular disease and a host of other ailments, such as viral asthma. Is that not a public health issue? Seems like it to me.

I kind of look at it like gun control, they aren't saying you can't smoke, they are just limiting where you can, which seems a little double sided to me. If i have a freedom they it shouldn;t be muzzled for any reason, without compromise. I do not believe it's the cigarettes persay, as it is the crap that goes into cigarettes that causes health problems. But instead of cleaning up big tobacco cause we make sooooo much money off it and it's taxes, we just ban it in public places and make people think they are bringing better health to America while places like Mc Donalds and Coke can project their products to kids as nutritional meals with a smile with out any say or thought about it. As Bill said in another post, I feel, this is just another weapon of mass distraction to what is really going on. Im sure there are far more important issues that could be taken up in this country, but if people don't know whats going on they do not care. So keeping the blinders on in this country has become number one preogative to distract us from everything else.

The governemnt should stay the hell out of everyones business instead of acting like we can't make decisions for ourselves. Don't like smokey bars? Nobody forces you to spend your money there. Don't want to eat in a smoking retaraunt? Support ones that are smoke free. I do understand there is an industry there, and waitress', servers, bartenders and cooks now do not have to inhale smoke all day just to make a living. But I also feel that if it was such a concern, why wouldnt the workers unite and force their employees to make their establishments smoke free? That's how it was once done. Don't like the way your treated at work, throw the bosses out!

One problem at a time my friend.  I have a right to walk into a bar in Arlington Heights and enjoy myself there without getting caught up in second hand smoke.  Why?  Because the law now says so.  Do people disagree with this?  Sure.  Do people think the government should be focusing on other issues?  Sure.  And so do I.  But you know what?  It's nice that I can go to a bar and walk out not smelling like smoke. Maybe one day the government will say Big Mac's and fries are against the law.  But I doubt they will because I can walk into a Mcdonalds and not he harmed by smelling the food.  If I should choose to indulge in the food then that's different.  If they find that smelling big mac's causes cancer then I bet the government will enact a law.
